Seinfeld and #FUNERALSELFIES | FFFW #36

WE HAVE A LOTTA ISSUES

On this day in 1998, the final episode of Seinfeld aired, ending almost a decade of arid and sarcastic situations. It was a show about nothing, about a show about nothing. Some people say that’s what the FFFW is. But haters gonna hate. To commemorate this special day, I will kick off this weekend with a Seinfeld quote and a GIF to match.

“Make no mistake about why these babies are here – they are here to replace us.” – Jerry Seinfeld

GAME TIME!

Researchers have found what they believe to be the world’s oldest urn. What year do you think they say it’s from?

  1. 7000 BC
  2. 1200 AD
  3. 3500 BC

SHOULD YOUR FUNERAL HOME BE ON TIKTOK?

TikTok almost isn’t new anymore. It started getting mainstream in 2019 and built a massive user base during the pandemic. So with so many people being on a platform, shouldn’t you be there too?

Well, no… but yes. See, your demographic isn’t actively using TikTok enough to justify a large budget and time commitment to it. There’s also no way to target your content specifically to your community. So for the time being, you shouldn’t stress too much over this platform. That being said, adapting the trends to a funeral home would be amazing to see, and we here at the FFFW VERY MUCH support it. So, though you don’t HAVE to and it might not be SUPER beneficial, you should start making some Toks.

So what does work? Still, the best platform for reaching people 55 and up (your target demographic) is Facebook. And nobody manages funeral homes on Facebook as well as DISRUPT Media. If you’re interested in seeing high ROI through social media then you should see what all DM has to offer!

FUNERAL SELFIES

Proper online funeral etiquette is very different for different people. Social media is that way in general. Some folks are extremely private, even using fake names, while others post EVERYTHING. If you want to know more about what’s respectful and what is not – check out CD’s latest article on the topic.

But, this just reminded me of a weird phenomenon from my childhood (I am gen-z so this was about 6-8 years ago). Do you ever have memories that are so obscure? Like I thought this memory may have been made-up or at least highly exaggerated, but no, ladies and gentle my memory, upon further research, is VERY REAL. I’m talking about FUNERAL SELFIES.

These existed and continue to exist! I think it’s wild and probably inappropriate, but I’m not here to judge. Who knows, maybe that last perfect snap is exactly what someone needs for closure. That being said, for people who may be inclined to take funeral selfies (aka selfies taken with a casketed body.) I want to present my case as to why you should not – and for the sake of argument, none of these have to do with respect or dignity or anything like that. If you’re a funeral director who gets uncomfortable with people doing such things, maybe this will be a good resource for you.

1) POOR LIGHTING

Funeral homes often don’t have great lighting. Perfect selfie lighting is either natural (sunlight) or very white. So, your skin is going to look weird, and that jawline just isn’t going to pop.

2) LOW ENGAGEMENT

Whether or not you are, lots of people don’t like the idea of these selfies. So, when you post them your engagement rates are going to be TERRIBLE! If you want to be an influencer, you gotta do better than the average Instagrammer.

3) BETTER ANGLES

You need better angles for the perfect selfie. To pose with your casketed loved one, you’re going to have to crouch down and hold your arm in a weird position to get both of you in there. The negative attention you’ll receive from this little stunt isn’t worth it if you don’t at least look great!

Overall, take your selfies somewhere else, you’ll look better, and everyone else will feel better.

COMIC OF THE WEEK

In this profession, you need to be very precise with your words.

YOU OTTER BE PROUD

Let’s be honest, our profession gets a lot of negative press, so we’ve searched the internet to find stories of funeral things getting respect and doing great things!
