Funeral Rap Is Back? | FFFW 150

DISCLAIMER: None of the F’s in FFFW stand for “facts.” Enjoy the satire.

Woah! It’s issue 150? That’s like actually insane. Because that’s such a big number. It’s rare that we do anything 150 weeks in a row . . . and it’s even more rare that the thing we do 150x is a funeral satire column. Actually, it’s never been done before.

I mean, we’ve been making this goofy thing for about three years now. We’ve watched the whole world change together and we’ve laughed through it all.

So, thank you. Thank you for reading this and giving it so much support. Here’s my GIF of thanks.

LIL’ EEL BREAKS HIATUS WITH FUNERAL BANGER

In 2019, funeral-rap sensation “LIL’ EEL” took the funeral profession by storm with his viral hit “OLD TOWN ROAD (FUNERAL REMIX).” Now in 2023, after a 4 year hiatus, he’s back with his next offering, “Sepio Socks Rap.”

We had the chance to sit down with the M.C. and see the true man behind the mic.

FFFW: LIL’ EEL, you entered the profession with a bang back in 2019. Why the four-year break at the height of your fame?

EEL: Actually, just call me EEL. But yeah, it’s not about the fame. Funeral-rap (Frap) is a passion. After the success of OTR, I coulda had it all. The biggest brands in the funeral profession were knocking at my door. People offered convention tours, sponsorships, and record deals. But, it all seemed so commercial. And if there’s one thing I’ll never do, it’s sell out. So I stayed in the shadows, honed my craft, and just let the creative juices cook.

FFFW: That’s so interesting. So can you tell us about your latest song?

EEL: Yes, of course. “Sepio Socks Rap” is the height of my creativity. It’s being used to promote a contest for DISRUPT Media and Sepio Guard that people can read about here. But, I didn’t even know they wanted to do a contest when I wrote it. See, the whole song is a metaphor. “Sepio Socks” represents the underlying desire we all have for significance and love in this life. It just so happened that it was exactly what Sepio Guard and DISRUPT Media were looking for.

FFFW: So the song isn’t actually about Sepio Guard and the promotional socks they make?

EEL: Not exactly. But art is up for interpretation. Some of the greatest songs get interpreted in ways the artist never thought of. If it happened to Bruce Springsteen with “Born in the USA” and Eagles with “Hotel California” then I’m not surprised that it’s happening to me.

FFFW: Wow, I thought the whole point of your art was to literally write about things inside of the funeral profession. I didn’t realize you were so deep.

EEL: Yeah, I love using the imagery and vocab of this profession to convey the deep things in life. In the end, love is my message. If I can change just one life through these songs then it’s all worth it. That’s why I’m back, this world needed a little hope, it needed a little spark, it needed a LIL’ EELI.

FFFW: Do you have any closing remarks?

EEL: I think my music speaks for itself.
