The Next WilbertEDU® Webinar: Funerals for Sitting Members of Congress

Overland Park, KS – John DeBord, in his leadership role with LHT Consulting Group, concentrates on the intentional planning, event logistics and corresponding protocol that are indispensable to the implementation of high-visibility funeral and memorial services.  DeBord will present:  What You Should Know When Handling the Services for a Sitting Member of Congress on August 4, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. CDT.

During this presentation, DeBord will provide the protocol and guidance from multiple agencies that help funeral directors who have been asked to care for a sitting or certain former member of Congress.  He will highlight the entitlements extended by the respective chamber (House or Senate) for an Official or State funeral and offer guidance on navigating the details with interagency partners such as the Sergeant-at-Arms Office, DoD/Military District of Washington National Events staff, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Capitol Police, and U.S. Marshall’s Service.

In researching for this presentation, DeBord has sent a request to key-leader counterparts at the Senate and House Sgt.-at-Arms offices, DOD State Funeral Planners, and Capitol Police Dignitary Protection Division – asking this question: What are three things you would want a funeral director to know or do when they are contacted by the family/staff of a deceased member of Congress?  He will share a compilation of their responses, along with his team’s vast experience in this realm of funeral service that will form the content of the presentation. As the trend continues for members of Congress to remain in office for longer periods, and certain entitlements for those former members who held a specific leadership role expands, the collective funeral service profession will see greater opportunities to serve these members.

This program is certified with the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice (APFSP) for one (1) hour of continuing education*.
