It Does Exist, You Just Can’t Buy It
The casket shaped tanning bed went viral late last year when Caleb Wilde posted the below image on the Confessions of a Funeral Director Facebook Timeline.
Other images have surfaced showing a more realistic casket tanning bed that is actually real (see below):
The ‘casket tanning bed’ aka ‘Sundead’ does exist, you just can’t buy it anywhere.
Sundead, a conceptual piece of a tanning bed that is shaped like a coffin, was created by Argentina-based artist and video director Luciano Podcaminsky in 2012. The installation is a grim but powerful statement that warns of the health dangers of tanning beds.
The installation is characterized by the identifiable form of a coffin, however the interior is lined with rows of bright glowing lighting, referencing those used in solarium. ‘sundead’ is constructed from felt, polyurethane coating, iron and fluorescent lamps and reflects the unhealthy, and sometimes fatal consequences of vanity.
The ‘sundead’ was exhibited at Room 8 in Centro Cultural Recoleta.
We still have not been able to locate the ‘sundead’ for sale online.
