Does Violent Trauma Change the Decomposition Process?
Intuitively, it seems like it should: penetrating wounds that breach skin and tissues provide more access to insects and air — key elements in the process of biological breakdown. It seems logical that more openings in the skin caused by penetrative wounds such as gunshots, pulverization, stabbings, and other forceful trauma should hasten putrefaction.
But while some effects of traumatic deaths are predictable to a limited extent, decomposition’s progress is usually not significantly affected. Research is not definitive; the activity of insects may accelerate in some cases, for example, but they still prefer natural orifices to sites of penetrative wounds. Variations in the manner of death and the extend of trauma to the body play a large part in any differences outside of the expected processes of decay.
Individualized Trauma
Bodies that go through extreme trauma are the most likely to experience individualized effects in decomposition. Since each body’s particular manner of death is the final event in an individual’s particular life, no two courses of decomposition are alike, even with the experience of trauma. Overall health, existing medical conditions, the environment, and other factors still have their roles to play in how much wounds and trauma affect the process of decomposition.
Post-mortem interval (PMI) stages in particular may be affected, however. As human remains follow a predictable breakdown sequence which allows estimations of time of death under many cases, such timing estimation might not apply in the usual way in cases of catastrophic death, when tissues are extremely damaged, as in cases if crushing and disarticulation.
Exsanguination has been considered (though less frequently in controlled studies) as a possible condition affecting the rate of decomposition. Less fluid in the body is available to the process of bacterial growth within the tissues for putrefaction, but there’s little evidence directly supporting the theory.
One method which did show a direct corollary to decomp process and PMI changes (though not as violently traumatic as, say, a car accident or a fall from great height) was poisoning. Toxins in the tissues had the effect of slowing the process down by killing off the bacteria involved in decay and directly suppressing development of insect activity, specifically placement and larval development.
So violent trauma can throw a bit of a wild card into proceedings. Blood loss, overall health, environmental conditions, and microbial and insect activity might certainly be affected, but unpredictably. Current evidence supports treating traumatic injury as one of many interacting variables in decomposition.
