Happy February 16th. It’s “National Almond Day.” So here are some almond facts for you:

1. Almonds are not true nuts | Technically, almonds are seeds of the fruit of the almond tree. The fruit is a drupe, not a true nut, with the almond we eat being the seed inside the hard outer shell.

2. Ancient status symbol | In ancient Rome, almonds were considered a symbol of fertility and were often thrown at weddings, similar to the modern tradition of throwing rice.

3. Almond trees in bloom | Almond trees are among the first to bloom each spring, sometimes as early as February, creating breathtaking landscapes of pink and white flowers before the leaves appear on the trees.

There you go. Now that we’ve celebrated the holiday, let’s get into our weekly regimen of gif and goodness.
