ICCFA’s Government & Legal Committee Resumes Annual Trip to Capitol Hill
STERLING, VA (April 26, 2023) – The International Cemetery, Cremation, and Funeral Association’s Government and Legal Committee returned to Capitol Hill on March 21-23, 2023, after a few years of virtual meetings. During the visit, the committee met with the offices of several senators & representatives, as well as representatives from the Federal Trade Commission, to speak on the pressing issues within deathcare and advance ICCFA’s legislative agenda. The ICCFA’s partnership with Dykema and their Federal Government Policy Team was instrumental to the success of these meetings.
Committee members and ICCFA staff met in-person with representatives from the Senate Finance Committee, Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, and the House Energy & Commerce Committee to discuss the association’s legislative and regulatory priorities. ICCFA’s representatives discussed the Funeral and Cemetery Trust Modernization Act; the consensual Donation Research and Integrity Act, the Funeral Rule; and the newly proposed Non-Compete Rule. The visit provided an important opportunity for key legislators and regulators to see and hear from the ICCFA on federal policy issues impacting the profession.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to meet with our nation’s representatives in-person again,” said Poul Lemasters, Esq., ICCFA’s General Counsel. “At the moment, there are a number of pieces of legislation and FTC rulings that will have a significant impact on deathcare professionals. These meetings have allowed us to share our expertise and help shape the future of legislation for our profession in an impactful way. It was a packed two days that I know made an impression on everyone we met.”
The offices that ICCFA members met with included Senators Tedd Budd (R-NC), John Cornyn (R-TX), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Todd Young (R-IN), and Representatives Jodey Arrington (R-TX 19), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL 12), Dan Crenshaw (R-TX 2), Drew Ferguson (R-GA 3), Richard Hudson (R-NC 9), Dan Kildee (D-MI 8), John Larsen(D-CT 1), and Linda Sanchez (D-CA 38).
A full overview of the trip will be published in an upcoming issue of ICCFA’s publication, Memento Mori. For more information on the ICCFA’s Government and Legislative Committee’s efforts, please visit iccfa.com/advocacy.
