Funeral News? Gotta Get SOCIAL!

How do you get your Funeral News?  Newsletters and monthly industry magazines have traditionally dominated the landscape for funeral related news topics.  In our era of immediate information at our fingertips, even the “traditional” providers have initiated other mediums for reaching funeral directors and interested industry parties such as manufacturers or similar (non consumer).  Unfortunately, consumers get their news about the funeral industry from local and national media outlets with more often than not negative headlines.

The Pew Research Center conducted research  Evolving Role of News on Twitter & Facebook about where consumers getting their news.  Just last week, big news was reported that Facebook has 1 Billion Users on a Single Day.  So if all of this information about consumers and communication makes sense, why is the funeral industry so resistant and hesitant to use Social Media?

The “trickle effect” of news and information from funeral industry sources is fragmented at best. The only daily news source for us is Connecting Directors which utilizes a complete Social Media platform.   There are very good bloggers reaching primarily consumers for example Confessions of a Funeral Director and Order of the Good Death with a brad following.  Within the industry primarily focused on reaching funeral professionals  Funeral One and Answering Service for Directors ASD are the leaders with excellent content (yes, The Funeral Commander is pretty good however I give homage to those that lead).  A number of pod casts exist in the industry, however with not much “punch power” of content or following from funeral directors nor consumers.
