[HUMOR] SNL Spoofs Obama Funeral Selfie
Saturday Night Live (SNL) wasted no time in tackling the comedy of errors that unfortunately distracted from the public memorial for former South African President Nelson Mandela, who died at the age of 95-years-old on Dec. 5 and was laid to rest in his childhood home of Qunu, South Africa on Dec. 15 after 10 public days of mourning.
As NewsOne previously reported, South Africa’s deaf federation claimed that the sign language interpreter at Mandela‘s memorial service was a phony. Concerns were raised by deaf people watching the memorial held on December 10 in FNB stadium. Though mystery initially shrouded the incident, it was discovered that interpreter Thamsanqa Jantjie suffered from Schizophrenia and was allegedly in the midst of a psychotic break. Jantjie claims that he was hallucinating that angels were talking to him and was doing the best that he could.
In addition to that, there was Selfiegate. President Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt snapped a selfie that caused the media to lose their collective mind. Not only was it a polarizing picture for some, First Lady Michelle Obama was captured with a stern expression on her face.
Roberto Schmidt, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) photographer who took the infamous selfie, said the fracas was much ado about nothing, but it still proved to be ripe SNL material.
