imageMourners dressed up as Star Wars characters and superheroes at the funeral of an ex-soldier yesterday to fulfil his dying wish.

Friends and family of former Royal Highland Fusilier Alan Duncan turned up as Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia and Darth Vader.

Others were kitted out as Spider-Man, Batman, the Joker and even Herman Munster.

Alan,30, died on Monday after a 22-month battle with lung and brain cancer. Pallbearers in costume carried his coffin into Daldowie Crematorium in Uddingston, Lanarkshire. The Star Wars theme played as they left.

Alan’s mum Jackie, 48, of Easterhouse, Glasgow, told how her son planned his unique funeral for a year-and-a-half.

She said: “He loved the Star Wars movies and superheroes. He had the funeral all planned and had a character each person would be.”

Alan, who served in Iraq, was brought up in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, before moving south, then to the city’s Cranhill.

He was diagnosed with nonsmall cell cancer in June 2008 and treated for three tumours in his lungs. A year later, doctors found a brain tumour that was terminal.

Alan’s family and friends are raising cash for Marie Curie. To donate, see www.mariecurie.org.
