Welcome to the two-hundred-and-sixtieth edition of Morticians’ Monday Morning Mashup, 4M #260 where we gather up some of the smaller stories from around the industry and give them a good shake before passing them along to you. Here’s what shook out this week.

You Can’t Regulate Trust

A routine attempt to move a preneed burial policy spiraled into a massive criminal case in Jamestown, Tennessee, landing a local funeral director behind bars on 52 criminal charges.

The trouble for Chadrick “Chad” Mundy, owner and director of Mundy Funeral Home, began unfolding late spring 2026 when families and state regulators noticed major red flags. Initial reporting by WBIR 10News revealed grieving relatives complaining about bad checks, missing donation money, and severe delays in receiving cremated remains.

While those initial complaints brought the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to his doorstep in May, the broader financial fraud scheme officially unravelled when a living client tried to transfer her funeral insurance policy to another home. According to reporting highlighted by WVLT, Homesteaders Life Company tried processing the transfer only to discover Mundy had already filed a death claim on her policy and collected the cash despite her being very much alive. A subsequent audit uncovered at least five bogus death payout claims on living people, including a claim Mundy filed on his own wife.

Homesteaders said they have safeguards and checks to limit this kind of fraud, but like most carriers, it doesn’t require death certificates to validate claims. Another insurance industry professional we spoke with pointed out that these transactions are built on trust among professionals driven by a mutual desire to serve their families seamlessly.

By August, state regulators issued an emergency suspension shutting down Mundy Funeral Home. The case culminated when the Fentress County Grand Jury returned a 52-count indictment against Mundy, as detailed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The charges include multiple counts of grand theft, insurance fraud, financial exploitation of vulnerable adults, abuse of a corpse, criminal simulation, and writing worthless checks. Mundy was arrested and booked into the Fentress County Jail on an $80,000 bond.

Legal Protections and Underwater Tombs in the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes hold thousands of remarkably preserved shipwrecks in their cold, fresh waters, offering incredible historical windows for recreational divers. However, these underwater sites face a complex legal situation when it comes to long-term protection. Legal scholar and archaeologist Ryan Seidemann recently argued in the Detroit Mercy Law Review Online that standard cemetery laws ought to extend to shipwrecks that serve as resting places for human remains. While federal laws like the Sunken Military Craft Act safeguard military vessels, civilian shipwrecks located in federal waters often lack these same foundational legal protections. Unlike land-based burial sites that automatically receive legal safeguards as recognized cemeteries, underwater sites containing disaster victims do not share this status.

Recreational divers continue to play a vital, positive role in locating and identifying these historic wrecks. Even so, updated legal frameworks remain essential to shield these resting places from looting and insensitive exploration, helping strike a thoughtful balance between historical public interest and deep respect for those who perished at sea. Osage Nation Reviews Budget for Tribal Funeral Home Project

In Oklahoma, the Osage Nation Congressional Culture Committee recently met to evaluate the proposed fiscal year 2027 budget for the upcoming Wahzhahze Funeral Home. Introduced under bill ONCA 26-50, the Executive Branch requested $715,295 to cover operational foundations, including four full-time salaries, administrative and travel expenses, and key equipment such as a hearse, lowering devices, tents, and chairs. Executive Branch Chief of Staff Andrea Kemble shared that interviews are already under way for a lead director and embalmer. While designed primarily as a community service rather than a profit-driven enterprise, securing licensed management remains a critical step toward establishing formal operating procedures.

During the meeting, several lawmakers expressed hesitation about approving the full request without a unified, multi-departmental strategic plan in place. Concerns centered on allocating four full-time roles ahead of low initial service volumes and committing to major capital expenses before a clear roadmap is finalized. In response, leadership suggested potential budget adjustments, such as trimming temporary transport fees and hearse rental allowances, with a complete operational plan expected by the end of the quarter. Despite the debate, committee members reaffirmed their commitment to seeing this meaningful project through—originally launched in 2022 with federal COVID-19 relief funds—and agreed to refine the figures collaboratively.
