A new campaign launched this week on crowd-funding site Indiegogo.

The Memorial Post bills itself as “the world’s most comprehensive online tool for creating and publishing advertising-free obituaries.” They are hoping to raise $20,000 to finish their site and get it live.

Based in Vancouver, founder Keith Stride first began learning about Legacy.com when he noticed ads appearing beside his late father’s online obituary. This seems to be what compelled him to create the anti-Legacy. “He’s selling online advertising 24 hours a day” says Stride in the video as he launches into a play by play on the business model of the Illinois obituary giant.

The Memorial Post features easy to use templates, a clean design, and charges users a one-time fee of under $50 to create and publish an obituary. But here’s where it gets interesting. They’ve also created a platform where users can do things like write and bank their own obituary (is anyone else doing this?) and easily connect with writers and video editors to help create top notch content for a loved one’s online memorial.

If even remotely successful, this could be a great story for our profession. I for one, wish him all the luck in the world.

Stay tuned.
