When you can answer that question confidently you will be the funeral professional we all aspire to be.
Performance without empathy is hollow. Empathy without humility is empty. Humility without conviction is phoney. Conviction without thought is a joke.
So think about it.
Just who do you think you are?
Indeed the cars have to shine and the shoes have to be polished but the part that needs to shine the most is inside you. Your inner light has to be brighter than the greatest darkness you will ever encounter. When it shines through those you serve will know that everything will be OK. They will know that they can stop worrying because you will take care of everything.
?Shining up the inside? takes a lot of work. My favorite sermon came from my friend Gladys Olsen. She preached about the Altar Guild ladies who polish the brass faithfully every Friday afternoon so it will shine on Sunday when everyone else comes to get themselves polished up for the week that lay ahead.
I am no religious fanatic by a long shot ? but I will stand by the premise that our inner light is magnified by a power much larger than we can imagine. You may prefer to commune with nature in solitude or meditate quietly in a corner of your room but acknowledging that higher power stokes the fire that makes your light burn brighter and clearer.
So ? again I ask ? Just who do you think you are?
