FlashBack Technology Preserves Eulogies at Graveside Memorials

For centuries, the fundamental tools used to honor loved ones after they pass have remained virtually unchanged. Gravestones permanently carve out names and dates, and framed photographs preserve moments in time, but the deeply personal words spoken during a service have historically faded into memory. A West Liberty, Kentucky company is changing that tradition by introducing a patented technology that captures spoken eulogies and makes them accessible at the monument itself.

Bridging a Centuries-Old Gap in Memorialization

Founded by inventor Hershel Adkins, Flashback LLC has introduced the FlashBack device—the first product engineered specifically to record and play a person’s life story both at the funeral service and directly at their final resting place. By enabling visitors to listen to recorded tributes with a simple touch, the device establishes an entirely new category within the memorialization industry.
“A monument tells you when someone was born and when they passed. FlashBack tells you who they were. That is the difference between marking a life and preserving one, and we believe every family deserves that choice.”With approximately 3.1 million deaths occurring annually in the United States, families dedicate immense thought to choosing monuments, inscriptions, and service details. Yet the eulogy—often the most intimate reflection of a person’s character—has historically lacked a permanent medium. FlashBack turns these one-time spoken tributes into long-lasting family keepsakes.

Transforming the Funeral Industry and Family Legacies

The granting of a United States patent confirms the unique nature of the FlashBack device, marking it as an original category in grief care rather than an incremental update to existing products.
Funeral directors incorporating FlashBack into their services report that the concept fills a void many families did not realize existed until presented with the option. As a result, adoption of the technology is expanding among funeral homes nationwide.
“A great-grandchild can stand at a graveside and hear a voice describing the character, humor, accomplishments, and love that defined someone they never had the chance to meet. This is the power of preserving not just a name but a narrative.”For future generations, the device offers connection beyond traditional photos or inscriptions, allowing descendants born long after a relative’s passing to hear authentic stories told by those who knew them best.
