disruptmedia.co – On this episode I answer the question ‘Will Facebook Live Crush Funeral Live Streaming Companies?’ and make a bold prediction about the future of funeral live streaming.
Haven’t heard of Facebook Live? Facebook Live lets you connect with your fans, friends and followers by sharing real-time video of what you’re seeing and doing. Facebook has been rolling out Live to celebrities since August 2015 and just announced that Facebook iPhone users will have full access to the feature.

I totally agree. I was a customer of Event by Wire a few years back. The problem was a lot of the families did not want to pay for the service. This will give families the opportunity for this.
Great observation, Ryan. I agree. Facebook live funeral streaming was inevitable and will increase the importance of well choreographed funeral service by a factor of the rapidly increasing size of its audience. More will be expected of funeral practitioners and providers. Facebook live streaming will give consumers multiple opportunities to experience and compare the value they receive. This is a good thing for the profession. What’s around the corner? LastTripAdvisor?
Agreed Mark!
Ryan, I was checking this out on facebook and it says you can only go live for 30 minutes at a time. Until they expand this it’s still not that viable. Plus I have found very little demand for live funeral broadcast. It works just as well to post a video of the whole service on youtube so the family can watch it at a later time
I think a couple of things will come into play. It sounds as though Event by Wire was a service you had to pay for? We currently use Livestream.com, and although we had to buy a broadcaster (minimal cost), it connects directly to our HD camera and broadcasts out to their servers for free. So my main questions are:
1. How long do the videos get to stay on your page before they’re deleted?
2. Right now it’s basically Periscope. Hold your phone and film… for those who want quality or have a large chapel, will there be a broadcaster device?
Hi Brian –
The video will stream live on the users timeline and will be placed permanently on the timeline, like an uploaded video does, when the stream has finished. This would satisfy the on-demand service provided by the current funeral live stream companies.
So I see that definitely being beneficial. The next hurdle is quality. Unless you stick that phone/tablet camera within 5′ of what you’re intending to film you’ll end up with horrid quality. We currently shoot across a 75′ chapel, and then use filters/post production to create the best footage we can. In this scenario, a phone/tablet would not even compare unfortunately. Hoping they can create some sort of broadcaster or device so it takes the feed from what you’re filming with and sends it up to FB.
