Understand the ROI of Social Media? [Gary Vaynerchuk shares Staggering Social Media Perspective]
Gary Vaynerchuk shares a shocking perspective about the businesses that fail to recognize and understand the ROI of Social Media.
“…Borders didn’t believe in it, they gave Amazon the infrastructure; they’re out of business. Blockbuster didn’t believe in it, they let Netflix come in and put them out of business.”

No doubt social media matters, but the “logic” of saying that Blockbuster went out of business because of social media doesn’t fly. Blockbuster went out because a whole category of business (video rental) became irrelevant, and even Netflix is struggling to stay in business because of changing consumer choice.
Very little of that has to do directly with social media. Social is a challenging and interesting advertising medium. It is not a product or a service. When a product or service becomes outmoded, it goes away. Amazon pioneered online retailing, got an early lead, and has staked everything on stealing sales from the brick and mortar world. The weaker players will get knocked out. That’s what happened to Borders.
I know the world is moving faster than it used to, but we still need to slow down and think once in a while. The logic in the video is like saying that steam locomotives were replaced by diesel locomotives because the telephone was invented. It kinda happened at the same time, but diesel replaced steam because it was a better technology. The fact that the telephone came along is for all intents and purposes irrelevant.
Coincidence does not necessarily mean causation.
