New Funeral Home Tax Practice Led by Chris Duncan
Johnson Consulting Group recently announced the official launch of Tax Services. Designed as an expansion of its accounting and financial management solutions, this specialized practice delivers year-round tax compliance and strategic planning tailored specifically to the needs of funeral home and cemetery owners and operators. To lead the initiative, JCG has appointed Chris Duncan, a licensed CPA with over 25 years of public accounting expertise, as Director of Tax Services.
Proactive Tax Strategy Built for the Death Care Industry
Between handling multi-state compliance filings, navigating complex ownership decisions, and managing day-to-day operations, funeral and cemetery professionals often delay tax planning until deadlines approach. JCG’s new practice bridges this gap by engaging with clients continuously throughout the year rather than solely during tax season. This proactive approach minimizes financial surprises, maintains compliance, and ensures business decisions are made with complete tax awareness.
The new Tax Services practice delivers full-spectrum support across three core areas. First, it provides complete and accurate compliance management for business, individual, trust, and estate returns, including multi-state filings and agency correspondence. Second, it delivers forward-looking tax planning focused on entity structure, owner compensation, depreciation schedules, and succession strategies.
Finally, the team provides specialized advisory services—such as tax modeling and acquisition due diligence—backed by JCG’s deep familiarity with the cemetery and funeral care sector.
By pairing specialized tax expertise with JCG’s combined 800 years of profession experience, clients can evaluate capital investments, succession paths, acquisitions, and sales with long-term financial impacts integrated into the plan from day one.
Veteran Leadership to Head New Practice
Chris Duncan brings more than two decades of public accounting experience to JCG, specializing in tax compliance, state and local tax matters, and consulting for business sales and acquisitions. His career encompasses leadership roles at national and regional accounting firms, as well as founding and operating his own CPA firm. He holds active CPA licenses in North Carolina and South Carolina.
“It’s not what you get, it’s what you keep, and for too long tax planning has been the thing funeral home and cemetery owners put off until it’s already too late to do anything about it,” said Jake Johnson, President and CEO of Johnson Consulting Group. “Chris brings the kind of experience that changes that, and having him lead this practice means the people we work with get real strategy, not just a return filed once a year. I’m excited for what this adds to how we serve the profession.”
“Good tax planning works the same way in every profession: get ahead of the deadline instead of reacting to it,” said Chris Duncan, Director of Tax Services at Johnson Consulting Group. “That’s what I’ve spent the last 25 years building for business owners, and I’m excited to bring that same approach to the funeral home and cemetery owners and operators JCG serves.”
