NFDA Celebrates 301 Funeral Home Locations for Excellence in Service to Families and Communities

2026 Pursuit of Excellence honorees include recipients of the inaugural Remembering A Life Award

Brookfield, Wis. – The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is proud to recognize 301 funeral home locations around the world with the 2026 Pursuit of Excellence Award, honoring their commitment to providing outstanding service to families and communities while adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards.

This year’s honorees represent funeral homes from across the United States and around the world. While they differ in size, location and the communities they serve, each has demonstrated a commitment to continually raising the bar through compassionate service, professional development, community engagement and ethical leadership.

To earn the Pursuit of Excellence Award, funeral homes complete a rigorous evaluation of their practices and programs and must meet or exceed standards in key areas of funeral service, including compliance with state and federal regulations, staff education and professional development, family service, community engagement and professional involvement. Participants must also adhere to NFDA’s Pledge of Ethical Practices, affirming their commitment to integrity, honesty and accountability.

“Excellence in funeral service is ultimately about people – the families who place their trust in funeral professionals, the communities that depend on them and the dedicated individuals who make this work their life’s calling,” said NFDA Director of Public Relations Jessica Koth. “The 2026 Pursuit of Excellence honorees demonstrate every day what it means to continually learn, grow and find meaningful ways to serve others. We are incredibly proud to recognize their achievements.”

The 2026 honorees will be celebrated during the All-Star Recognition Ceremony, Monday, October 26 at 4 p.m., during the 2026 NFDA International Convention & Expo, October 25-28 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Remembering A Life Award

New in 2026, the Remembering A Life Award recognizes the profession’s most personal and meaningful funerals and memorial services. Recipients are selected based on their ability to go beyond the expected to create experiences that meaningfully honor a person’s life and support families as they grieve.

The Pursuit of Excellence Work Group considers factors such as how creatively a service honored the life of the person who died, how family wishes and cultural traditions were incorporated, and the ways funeral home staff exceeded expectations to create a meaningful experience for the family.

Four funeral homes were selected as the inaugural recipients of the Remembering A Life Award:

Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, White Lake, Michigan (Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, Highland Township, Michigan) – Created a highly personalized service that incorporated meaningful elements of the individual’s career, hobbies and community involvement, including an innovative way for guests to continue sharing memories and messages of support with the family long after the funeral.
Families First Funeral Care & Cremation Center, Savannah, Georgia – Brought together music, dance, favorite foods and other personal touches to create a vibrant celebration of life, while using technology to meaningfully include loved ones who could not attend in person

Richard Myers Pinnacle Award

The Richard Myers Pinnacle Award recognizes funeral homes that develop an extraordinary program or service that far surpasses the definition of funeral service excellence. The award is conferred at the discretion of the Pursuit of Excellence Work Group and only when it encounters a remarkable example of excellence in the profession.

The 2026 Richard Myers Pinnacle Award recipient is Reeves Fruland & Baskerville Funeral Homes and Crematory, Coal City, Illinois (Reeves Fruland & Baskerville Funeral Homes and Crematory, Gardner, Illinois; Reeves Fruland & Baskerville Funeral Homes and Crematory, Morris, Illinois; Reeves Fruland & Baskerville Funeral Homes and Crematory, Wilmington, Illinois).

Reeves Fruland & Baskerville Funeral Homes and Crematory used its memorialization expertise and laser-engraving technology to create 180 limited-edition commemorative ornaments to raise funds to restore historic church bells that had been silent for more than 15 years. The project fully funded the approximately $18,000 restoration and generated enough additional support to restore the bells at a second local church. Today, the bells once again ring across the community, marking funerals, weddings and the rhythms of everyday life as they had for generations.

Best of the Best Award

The Best of the Best Award recognizes Pursuit of Excellence honorees whose programs and services stand out as exceptional examples of innovation and excellence in funeral service. The 2026 recipients are:

Capillas Señoriales Casa de Homeajes, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico – Created Santuarios Memoriales, personalized displays that use photographs, keepsakes, colors and meaningful objects to tell the story of a person’s life and help families maintain a connection with their loved one. The concept has grown from a creative display into an ongoing source of remembrance for families, with more than 1,000 personalized Santuarios created in Mexico and Guatemala.
Funeraria San Vicente S.A., Medellin, Colombia – Developed Funeral Transition Rooms within hospitals to transform the often-clinical experience immediately following a death into one centered on dignity, compassion and support. Operated by specially trained funeral professionals, the rooms provide families with a private place for an initial farewell, emotional support and guidance while also ensuring the careful, accountable transition of their loved one from hospital to funeral care.
Holman-Howe Funeral Homes, Lebanon, Missouri (Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Camdenton, Missouri) – Partnered with a local digital news organization to produce The Home, a documentary exploring the funeral home’s history, its longstanding connection to the community and the evolution of funeral service. Combining archival research, historic funeral vehicles and memorabilia with a behind-the-scenes look at contemporary funeral care and personalization, the project generated an enthusiastic response from the community.
Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Created Lanterns of Love, an annual community memorial event offering families affected by pregnancy and infant loss a welcoming place to remember, connect and find support. More than 140 people registered for the inaugural event, which included remembrance activities, grief resources, a memorial walk and the lighting of personalized lanterns, while also connecting families with ongoing community support.
Spann Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Dickson, Tennessee (Humphreys County Funeral Home, Waverly, Tennessee) – Created The Journey: Resources, Relationships, and the Road Ahead, a free community event designed to help families prepare for end-of-life decisions before a crisis occurs. Eight organizations brought legal, financial, hospice, grief, funeral and other resources together in one welcoming, no-pressure setting, while behind-the-scenes funeral home tours helped demystify funeral care and gave community members an opportunity to ask questions on their own terms.
