Throwback Thursday Cremation Edition: The Detroit Crematorium
The First Crematorium in the state of Michigan was constructed in Detroit by the Michigan Cremation Association, the founder of which was legendary Cremationist Dr. Hugo Erichsen. Construction began in 1887 and by December of that year the facility was ready for use. Mrs. Barbara Schorr, an Ohio resident who desired the cremation of her remains after death, was cremated in the facility 127 years ago yesterday, on December 10, 1887. After 42 years of successful operation, the crematorium merged with Woodmere Cemetery’s Crematorium in 1929, to become the Woodmere-Detroit Crematorium, and the 1887 building was razed.
