Brookfield, Wis. – The Funeral Service Foundation (FSF) is proud to announce the availability of two (2) $1,000 scholarships for 2013 funded  by the proceeds of the Memorial Classic Golf Tournament hosted by Johnson Consulting Group, Arizona. The scholarships will be awarded to either full or part-time students pursuing a career in funeral service.

The Memorial Classic Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund was created to honor those who blazed a trail in the profession. The inaugural scholarships, which will be awarded in 2013, will honor the memory of two of the industry’s greats: Dave Hirt and Bill Bischoff.

“The generosity of the Memorial Classic Golf Tournament in supporting our mission and creating a lasting tribute to these great men is philanthropy at its best,” FSF Executive Director Kathy Wisnefski said. “Thanks to this contribution, we will be able to honor the legacies left by Mr. Bischoff and Mr. Hirt by helping others pursue their own dreams.”

Bill Bischoff was a longtime leader in the industry, serving as Vice President of Sales for Hillenbrand Industries for 20 years, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Aurora Casket Company for 10 years, and consultant to Homesteaders Life Insurance Company and Johnson Consulting Group.

Dave Hirt had a life-long commitment to funeral service.  He spent 33 years as a part of Batesville Casket Company, starting as a member of the sales department and, at the time of his retirement, President and CEO. He played a major role in the development of Johnson Consulting Group and was a past board member of the Funeral Service Foundation.

The Memorial Classic Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund will award two (2) $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a mortuary science degree. Applications are available on the FSF website: www.funeralservicefoundation.org.

We all want to put the blame on cremation and ignore the fact that many of the issues facing funeral homes aren't because families choose cremation but because of bad business decisions of many funeral directors who don't want to change or accept cremation.
