VA’s Online Memorial Project Doubles reach with nearly 10 Million Veterans Memorialized using Keeper Memorials

On November 9, 2023 – The National Cemetery Administration Department of Veterans Affairs and Keeper Memorials announced a historic milestone for the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) project as it honors 9.8 million Veterans, a substantial increase from 4.8 million Veterans that were memorialized earlier this year.

VLM is an online memorial platform that honors nearly 10 million Veterans interred in VA National Cemeteries, VA grant-funded cemeteries, DoD-managed cemeteries (including Arlington National Cemetery); U.S. Park Service National Cemeteries, and now, thousands of private cemeteries where Veterans have received a VA-provided gravesite marker since 1996.

The additional 5 million memorialized Veterans, and their respective memorial pages, includes more than 4,000 Veterans who are interred in 87 foreign countries and more than 80,000 Veterans who were laid to rest at a state, tribal, or territory Veteran cemetery.

The VLM application and its storytelling features exceed the static online obituaries used by funeral homes to share information about the recently deceased. VLM utilizes Keeper Memorial’s interactive platform to tell a veteran’s life story and share it with the world. There have been over 73,000 contributions honoring Veterans made on VLM memorial pages to date.

Mandy Benoualid, President of Keeper Memorials, expressed, “The Veterans Legacy Memorial is a project that the Keeper team takes immense pride in being a part of. Honoring 4.8 million veterans, sharing their stories, and acknowledging the people who have been touched by their legacies was an extraordinary achievement. Now, as we’ve effectively doubled the number of Veterans we are honoring, our impact has grown significantly. We eagerly anticipate the continued growth of this project, touching even more families and preserving the enduring legacy of our nation’s heroes.”
