Welcome to the two-hundred-and-sixty-first edition of Morticians’ Monday Morning Mashup, 4M #257, wherein we deliver, to borrow a phrase from the estimable Lemony Snicket, we bring you all the news in fits of print! OK. That’s not true. It’s some of the news that we think you may have missed. Still, we try and pick the stories worth reading. So read away…

Tubthumping in Seattle

You’ve gotta love a comeback story, and Russ Weeks has one. Nearly 14 months after a catastrophic arson fire heavily damaged Columbia Funeral Home & Crematory in South Seattle, Weeks and his team are preparing to take the next big step in their recovery journey: demolition and a full rebuild.

On July 30, 2025, an act of arson severely damaged the main historic building of the South Seattle firm, which has served its local community for over a century. Despite the devastation, Weeks and his staff responded quickly, continuing operations out of the on-site crematory located on their 33,000-square-foot property.

While the property was briefly listed for sale late last year, offers didn’t reflect the true value or vision for the business. Weeks originally had considered moving but the city wouldn’t allow “another” crematory, so keeping the one he already had was his best option. He ultimately decided that rebuilding was the right path forward for both his staff and the community.

Demolition of the fire-damaged structure is slated to begin by late October, with design plans expected to be submitted early next year. The proposed new facility will feature and a brighter, more welcoming atmosphere for grieving families, two dedicated chapels, and modernized family amenities. Weeks expects the new state-of-the-art facility to open within two years.

“I know we can rebuild. It’s just going to take time,” he told King5.com. “We will be there continuing, and the new building’s going to be great and serve their needs well into the future—better than it ever was.”

A Pre-Need Program You Don’t Have to Manage Alone

All designed to help you:

  • Expand your reach in the community
  • Increase market share
  • Build a reliable pipeline of future business

This isn’t just a service offering.

It’s a structured, supported path to long-term growth.

Tech Outages in Barbados

Government authorities and industry leaders have agreed on a series of emergency interventions to clear a growing backlog of deceased persons awaiting burial and cremation warrants, addressing a severe bottleneck that has forced grieving families across Barbados to delay final arrangements for weeks.

Distribution issues reached a tipping point following technical failures that crippled IT systems housed at the Forde and Simmons Complex, home to the Coroner’s Office. These network outages severely disrupted the transmission and issuance of required legal documents, including death certificates, burial warrants, and cremation permits. Funeral directors were forced to instruct staff to hand-deliver hard-copy documentation, medical certificates, and identification papers directly to state offices to prevent a complete standstill. Despite these manual workarounds, several scheduled funeral services had to be postponed, leaving grieving relatives in limbo and expanding storage strains on local funeral homes.

As reported by Barbados TODAY, Minister of Legal Affairs and Criminal Justice Michael Lashley and Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams met with Barbados Association of Funeral Directors President Ian Griffith to implement a direct relief strategy. Under the agreement, document handling is being temporarily relocated from the Forde and Simmons Complex to a specialized desk at the Registry to bypass ongoing network outages. Additionally, manual processing teams and temporary support staff are working alongside the acting coroner to process pending warrants by hand, while a joint working group oversees daily operations until the backlog is cleared.

Industry leaders point out that while the technological glitches triggered the current crisis, administrative backlogs are a recurring challenge for the island’s death-handling infrastructure. Similar delays have flared up in past years, driven by bottlenecks in autopsy scheduling, pathology shortages, and systemic administrative friction.

BAFD President Ian Griffith emphasized that modernizing physical IT infrastructure alone will not prevent future disruptions. The funeral directors’ association is pushing for a complete legislative and operational overhaul, citing that the legal framework governing coroners’ procedures and human remains management is decades old. The newly formed joint task force will begin reviewing broader legislative reforms and permanent management protocols in the coming weeks.

Singapore Adjusts

Jenny Tay, Managing Director of Direct Funeral Services, is transforming Singapore’s death care industry by shifting focus from traditional undertaker logistics to holistic grief support and emotional healing. Since taking the helm of her family business in 2013, Tay has modernized operations to help break long-standing cultural taboos surrounding mortality and end-of-life planning.

Under her leadership, the firm has embraced innovative initiatives to support grieving families. These efforts include integrating specialized audio frequencies into wakes to help encourage emotional release, creating storybooks to guide children through loss, and introducing digital tribute platforms for sharing memories. Tay also utilizes social media to foster open conversations about death, family dynamics, and mortality, aiming to encourage people to reflect on their lives and strengthen relationships. Additionally, her work extends to pro bono community initiatives through the Direct Life Foundation.

For full details on Tay’s approach to modernizing funeral care, read the complete story at The CEO Magazine.
