With out much hype at all, anywhere, the first National Cemetery Summit kicked off yesterday in Greenville, TN. Read below about the summit and who is attending.
A first-ever “national cemetery summit” meeting is being held here starting this evening and running through Thursday, the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site has announced.
“This historic summit will bring together superintendents of national cemeteries from across the nation.
“During the meetings, the leaders will discuss policy, operations, general procedures, sharing of resources and technology, and methods of maintaining these treasured landmarks,” an announcement said.
Lizzie Watts, superintendent of the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and National Cemetery, said this morning that the meeting at the General Morgan Inn will involve about 25 officials “who are going to write policy on the national cemeteries.”
She added, “We are very proud that the Andrew Johnson site, the only national cemetery that is a presidential site, will be hosting the event.”
THOSE ATTENDING
Attending the sessions at the General Morgan Inn will be representatives of Andersonville National Historic Site, Andew Johnson National Historic Site, Antietam National Battlefield, Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park.
Also, Custer-Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Fort Donelson National Battlefield, Gettysburg National Military Park, Vicksburg National Military Park, Shiloh National Military Park.
Also, Stones River National Cemetery, the Battleground Cemetery at Rock Creek Park, and Poplar Grove National Cemetery-Yorktown Battlefield.
Watts said the superintendent of Chalmette National Cemetery in Louisiana had to cancel his attendance at the meeting because of flooding in Louisiana.
The conference will begin with a reception this evening at the General Morgan Inn, Watts said.
The conference is not open to the public.
