DEERFIELD, ILL. — March 11, 2013 — Selected Independent Funeral Homes Educational Trust has chosen its first recipient ofthe Selected Leadership Academy ScholarshipRobert Nunnaley, Vice President and General Manager of Pines Funerals in Carthage, N.C., was chosen from a distinguished field of candidates to participate in the Selected Leadership Academy, a two-year structured program offered exclusively to members of Selected Independent Funeral Homes. The scholarship has been made available through a generous contribution from Meadow Hill Corporation, maker of Thumbies.

The scholarship will cover Nunnaley’s registration fee for the duration of his two-year enrollment as part of the 2013 Leadership Academy class. He also will receive a $300 reimbursement payment each year to defray the cost of books, fees and other program-related expenses. The total estimated value of this scholarship is $4,500. Any individual currently employed full-time (and not a majority owner) at a firm maintaining full membership in Selected Independent Funeral Homes is eligible to apply.

Nunnaley began his career in funeral service at the age of 18 with an apprenticeship at Thos. Shepherd & Son, Inc. in Hendersonville, N.C. He then attended Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science and, in 1990, relocated to Carthage to join Tommy Prickett of Fry and Prickett Funeral Home. He became a partner in 2000 and soon acquired two area funeral homes. He now operates the firm’s three funeral homes under the Pines Funerals brand.

“Since receiving the phone call I have been so excited about being able to participate and learn how to be a better leader,” said Nunnaley after learning of his selection. “Thank you to Meadow Hill for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

David Gordon, Founder and President of Meadow Hill Corporation shared his insights saying, “Selected Independent Funeral Homes stands for a level of excellence that is inspiring.” “The families Mr. Nunnaley serves, the funeral homes he helps run and the communities in which he lives will benefit from his efforts,” he added.
