13. 5 Reasons Why Kids Should Grow Up To Be Funeral Directors

12. THE END OF THE LINE FOR FORMALDEHYDE

I used to associate the National Funeral Director’s Association (NFDA) with Brooks-Brothers-clad lobbyists who never questioned the utility of highly toxic embalming fluids. So imagine my delight last week-it really felt like Christmas-when I opened my May 2016 copy of “The Director” magazine (the NFDA’s glossy trade journal) and found a remarkable article called “Excising a Health Risk: The time to look into formaldehyde-free products is now” by the NDFA’s environmental compliance counsel of twenty-five years, Carol Lynn Green.

Funeral home advertising: maybe not the best art project for children.

According to Redditor joshuar9476, Gilliland and Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg, Indiana asked kids to design their very own ads for the business. Why? We are not sure.

The results, which involve a reanimated corpse singing the business’s praises while an onlooker wonders why it is alive, are equal parts hilarious and macabre.

9. 12 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Became a Funeral Director

This job isn’t sad all the time — seriously.

The job is physically and emotionally draining. If we’re doing two funerals in a day, I’m going to be on my feet moving flowers and carrying caskets to set everything up. You’re also sometimes on call during the middle of the night — not every hospital has a refrigeration system to keep bodies overnight — which can eat into your sleep schedule. It’s emotionally exhausting as well. A lot of deaths are from nursing homes and people under hospice care, but we do get calls to pick up children and victims of trauma.

7. Funeral Director’s Facebook Post Goes Viral

Robert Falcon said he posted several photos of the child on Wednesday, including one of the boy in a small white casket, to encourage the hit-and-run driver to step forward and claim responsibility for taking the child’s life.

“I want you to see these pictures and I want you to know how much it pains me to know that you would run over a child and not stop to render aid,” Falcon wrote.  “I had to listen to a mother and father cry and bargain with God today because you took their son from them.”

5. 10 Things To Remember If You Love A Funeral Professional

Advertising executives, teachers, and doctors kind of have it made… at least in one regard.

Most of the time when you flip on a TV drama, the main characters work in one of these professions. Now we all know a regular day on Grey’s Anatomy isn’t exactly an accurate depiction of a doctor’s workday, but between all the drama and tears, the folks watching at home get a general sense that life in these professions is not for the faint of heart.

4. The Life Of A Funeral Director… From Head To Toe

Many of us get up day after day and night after night to juggle the many hats which make up the work we call “funeral directing.” This line of work is very different than most and it is not often easy. It seems to me, however, that we are not limited to the hats we wear. We put our bodies, minds, and very souls into the work we do. Sometimes, quite literally, we put our backs into it as well. From our heads to our toes, our investments are of great importance for many as they walk through the deep pain of loss.
