How to Know Who You’re Reaching Through Your Facebook Page

You can find out some helpful demographic information about the people who have been reached by your Facebook business page. It’s simple to do, and can be very informative. Here’s how:

Go to your funeral related business page (not your personal “home” news feed) and click on the Insights link at the top of the page. This will launch a general Overview screen, and an Overview bar will appear immediately under the Insights link button you just clicked. Now, in the Overview bar, click the People tab. Immediately under the People tab will appear two hotlinked headings. One is Your Fans, and the other is People Reached. people_reached

When you click on the Your Fans hotlink, you can view information, in the form of a bar graph, that displays the gender and age group breakdowns of the people who have become Fans of your web page (people who have chosen to Likeyour page). Immediately under the bar graphs is a table showing the countries, cities, and languages of your fan base. When viewing this information, ask yourself these questions:

  • Are we drawing the attention of those people we are hoping to reach?
  • Are the largest percentages of the genders and ages of our fans those whom we would consider to be our target demographic?
  • Do the bulk of our fans live within the region(s) we consider to be our service area?

If the answers to the above questions are “no” then you must reconsider the content you are posting. How can you appeal to the people you wish to reach? What can you do to garner more fans from the zip code areas near your funeral business?

The other linked heading is People Reached. When you click on this, you get similar graphs and tables, except these are the people who have interacted with your page, and who are not necessarily your fans. They have come across your page by clicking on your content shared by one of your fans, or through the use of Facebook advertising by which your page is displayed to people whom you choose to target through boosted content. Once again, you should ask yourself the same questions above when considering those whom you are reaching.
