Did NPS Officials Get A Harsh Enough Sentence?
Did the 6 officers behind the largest scam in funeral history get a harsh enough punishment?
Six officers and employees of National Prearranged Services Inc. were sentenced Thursday to prison for their roles in what prosecutors said was a $600 million scheme to defraud customers. The sentencing brings to an end the biggest trial the city has seen since the days of the mob.
James “Doug” Cassity, 67, former head of the business, will serve nine years and seven months.
Brent Cassity, his son, 46, will serve five years.
Former chief financial officer Randall Sutton, 68, will serve seven years.
Former attorney Howard Wittner, 76, will serve three years.
Former investment adviser David R. Wulf, 61, will serve 10 years.
Former officer Sharon Nekol Province, 69, will serve one year and six months.
The collective restitution for all of the defendants, excluding Wittner, tops $435.5 million.
Wittner was ordered to pay restitution of $10.5 million.
