Creedy Impressed with Winning Entries from Design for Death Competition
Raleigh, NC, June 17, 2013: Alan Creedy, who was recently selected as an independent judge for the International Design for Death competition, came away impressed with the winning entries in the competition. Design for Death is the world’s inaugural international competition to re-design death care for the future.
“The entries in the competition ran the gamut and many were extraordinary,” commented Creedy. “There are several concepts that are easily commercially viable. I’ll be curious to see if any of the companies in funeral service chooses to move forward with one or more of these ideas.”
Design for Death was conceived to challenge the international creative and design community to re-think and re-imagine the trappings of a funeral or memorial service, how internments can be conducted or the deceased remembered. The first phase of the competition sought submissions in how various aspects of death care can be environmentally friendly and interpretations of how design can better encapsulate the deceased and remember them.
“I was particularly impressed with the entry from Jae Rhim Lee,” added Creedy. “Her mushroom burial suit is so innovative that she presented it at the TED conference.” Lee’s presentation can be viewed at alancreedy.org.
TED is a nonprofit organization and brings together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. The TED conference takes place each spring in California and speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, and Sir Richard Branson.
The Design for Death winners have been invited to display their work at the 2013 NFDA International Convention & Expo in late October in Austin, TX. A short video showcasing the winners can be viewed at alancreedy.org. Complete details of the contest and the winning entries are available at www.designfordeath.org.
