Coleen Ellis, who opened up the first standalone pet funeral home in the United States, is making headlines again – this time as an author of a book that provides information on how to remember and honor pets when they die.

Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief provides essential information to pet owners on what to do when their pet dies and how to find a pet loss provider that is reputable and compassionate.

Ellis, the owner of Two Hearts Pet Loss Center in Greenwood, Ind., and also the co-chairperson of the Pet Loss Professionals Alliance, says that the book is also an important resource for anyone who works with bereaved pet owners, including funeral homes, veterinarians and grief specialists. According to Ellis, “I wrote this book so that pet parents will know that it’s OK to mourn the loss of a beloved pet, and I also wanted them to know their various options. But just as important, I wanted both veterinarians and death-care professionals to understand the trauma involved with losing a beloved pet. It can be just as devastating as losing a human family member.”

The book provides a wealth of important information, including:

  • Ideas on how to celebrate the special bonds people share with pets.
  • Checklists to choose the right cremation provider or funeral home.
  • Heartwarming stories that show how pets can be honored in life and in death.
  • Information on how death-care professionals, veterinarians and others can better serve pet parents.
  • Resources to help children cope with the loss of a pet.
  • Additional resources to help people remember their pets the way they want.

Book Already Getting Lots of Praise

The book is already being praised by members of the death-care community, veterinarians and others. This is what people are saying:

“Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief is a must read for anyone that is a pet lover and, anyone who has lost or is approaching the loss of their fur baby. Never has a book been written that can speak to and help you through the death of a pet as completely as this. As a pet loss professional, I would also recommend this as a wonderful resource guide. If you have a pet loss business or are thinking of getting into the pet loss profession, please get this book. Not only are the stories heartwarming but the information about the entire pet loss industry is priceless.”

Roberta Knauf, pet funeral director at Hillcrest-Flynn Pet Funeral Home &Crematory in Hermitage, Pa.

“When I am asked how many children I have, I always say six – two that walk on two legs and four that walk on four legs. Although some people look at me like I am crazy, I can see progress being made. The exceptional book Pet Parents will go a long way to assist our goal of making the lives of our animal companions matter in life and in death. When people read Pet Parents, they will enhance their knowledge of what these beautiful creatures mean to our society.”

– Joe Dwyer, motivational Speaker and Life Coach and author of Shelby’s Grace, a story about an abused dog that is rescued.

“This book is an invaluable resource for the unmentionable time that comes much too early for every pet parent. The stories and information shared in this book will change the way we honor and memorialize our pets and bring a new level of dignity to a previously neglected part of loving and living with pets. If I could impress one thing, get it now. Don’t wait for your pet’s senior years; don’t wait until you think you need it. Get it now, read it, share it and keep it on the shelf for when you’re ready to take action.”

– Robyn Kesnow, registered veterinary technician and animal registered nurse
